In 2009, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) set up an analytical laboratory, CALF, at Anand. Initially, the laboratory had testing facilities of animal feed and milk & milk products for compositional, nutritional & microbiological parameters. With the progress of time, laboratory upgraded itself with state-of- the-art instruments to take up analytical work of contaminants pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metals, aflatoxins & dioxins, etc.) and also widened its scope of testing (by including fruits & vegetables, fats & edible oils, honey, water, beverages & nutraceuticals). Further, in order to support breed improvement programmes and testing requirements of semen stations for production of bovine frozen semen, CALF had set up facility for Genetic testing and Bovine Disease diagnosis.

In April 2023 this department of NDDB became a fully owned subsidiary and now known as NDDB CALF Ltd.
